Custom Check lets your organization define its own quality rules inside ConfidenceCheck—so you can automatically catch brand, style, or compliance issues that are specific to your team.
Prerequisites
- NEW Enterprise plan. Contact your Customer Success Manager if you need to upgrade. Please note that this feature is currently available to all plans until March 22nd.
- Owner or Admin role to configure rules. All users can run Custom Check and view results.
What Custom Check Does
Standard ConfidenceCheck catches editorial errors, broken links, and accessibility issues. Custom Check extends this with rules you define—for example:
- Enforcing a specific company name spelling ("ContactMonkey" as one word)
- Flagging banned or deprecated terms
- Requiring employees to be referred to as "associates"
- Catching dates written in the wrong format
- Identifying off-brand color values or missing disclaimers
Up to 12 enabled rules can run per workspace. All rules are org-wide, meaning every user's ConfidenceCheck run applies the same rule set.
Configure Custom Check Rules
Only Owners and Admins can add, edit, or delete rules. Other workspace members can view rules but cannot change them.
- Open Email Settings in your ContactMonkey workspace
- Scroll to the Custom Check section
- Click Add Rule
- Fill in the two required fields:
- Title — A short label for the rule (max 50 characters, e.g., "Company Name Spelling")
- Rule — A plain-language description of what to flag (max 250 characters, e.g., "Flag any instance where the company name is not spelled exactly as 'ContactMonkey'—one word, with this capitalization.")
- The rule is enabled by default. Use the toggle to disable it without deleting it
- Click Save to apply

To edit a rule: Click the pencil icon beside your desired rule, make your changes, and save.
To delete a rule: Click the trash icon next to the rule. This action cannot be undone.
Tip: Write rules in plain, specific language. The more precise your rule description, the more accurate and consistent the results. For example, instead of "check for brand colors," write "Flag any use of green that is not exactly
#228B22or#7CFC00."

Run Custom Check on an Email
Once rules are configured, Custom Check appears automatically in the ConfidenceCheck popover for all users.
- Open your email draft in the Email Builder
- Click the glasses (👓) icon at the top right
- Find the Custom row (below Accessibility)
- Click the play button to check the email against your enabled rules, or click Start all to run Custom Check alongside Editorial, Links, and Accessibility simultaneously.
Results appear in the Custom results panel. Each violation shows:
- The rule title that was triggered
- A short description of why the content was flagged
- A clickable violation that scrolls to and highlights the specific email module containing the issue
Note: Custom Check results are descriptive only. The check identifies violations but does not suggest rewrites or auto-corrections.
Troubleshooting
The Custom row shows a “Configure” button instead of a play button
This means no rules are currently enabled in your workspace. An Owner or Admin needs to add at least one enabled rule in Email Settings before Custom Check can run.
Custom Check does not appear in ConfidenceCheck
Confirm your workspace is on the ConfidenceCheck Enterprise plan. If you believe you should have access, contact your Customer Success Manager.
Custom Check returns too many false positives
Revisit the instructions for the relevant rule. Make the description more specific—for example, narrow the scope, add exceptions, or include exact examples of what should and should not be flagged.
Custom Check ran but returned no violations
Great news! The email content didn't trigger any of your enabled rules.
