An extra blank bullet point can appear in your bullet lists when a ContactMonkey email is inserted into Classic Outlook, even though the list looks correct in the Email Builder. This is a Classic Outlook rendering limitation, and you can prevent it by building lists with the List content block or by starting your list with a top-level bullet.
Why does an extra bullet point appear in Classic Outlook?
The extra bullet appears when a bullet list is built inside a Text content block and starts at an indented (nested) level. Classic Outlook treats the indented list as a nested list and inserts a blank "parent" bullet above it.
ContactMonkey applies styling to hide that blank parent bullet, but Classic Outlook's rendering engine ignores it. That's why the list looks correct in the Email Builder and in most email clients, but shows an extra bullet once the content is inserted into Classic Outlook.
Deleting the extra bullet directly in Outlook doesn't reliably stick — ContactMonkey always sends the latest version saved in the Email Builder, so fix the list in the Email Builder instead.
How to Prevent Extra Bullet Points
Use the List Content Clock
Build bullet lists with the dedicated List content block instead of adding bullets inside a Text block. The List block isn't affected by this Classic Outlook issue.
- Open your draft in the Email Builder
- Click the Content tab on the right.
- Drag a List block into your email and add your bullet points
- Use the block's padding settings to adjust the list's position
- Send a test email to confirm the list displays correctly in Classic Outlook
Start the List with a Top-Level Bullet
If you keep the list in a Text block, make sure the first bullet sits at the top level — not indented with the TAB key or the Increase indent button.
- Click into the list in your Text block
- Place your cursor on the first bullet and use Decrease indent until the bullet sits at the top level
- Add nested bullets underneath after the first top-level bullet is established
