The new Image Editor lets you crop, reshape, remove backgrounds, add text, and build photo collages without leaving the Email Builder. This article explains how to open the new Image Editor, use each tool, and add your edited image to an email.
The new Image Editor is in beta and included on all plans. The original image editor (Apply effects in the image block) still works during the beta. To use the original editor, see Edit Images in the Email Builder.
Prerequisites
- Access to the Email Builder
- An image in JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF format, on your computer or in the File Manager
How to Open the New Image Editor
- Open an email in the Email Builder
- Click Edit Image in the top bar. The button is marked BETA
- Choose how to start:
- To edit one image, go to Edit an image and click Upload from computer or Choose from File Manager
- To combine photos, go to Make a collage and add up to 9 images the same way
You can also drag images from your computer onto either area.

How to Edit an Image That's Already in the File Manager
Choose from File Manager opens an image saved in My Files or Team Files, so you don't need to download it and upload it again.
- Click Choose from File Manager
- Select the My Files or Team Files tab
- Find your image and click Insert; the image opens in the Image Editor.
How to Crop, Rotate, and Flip an Image
- Select the Crop tool
- Under Aspect ratio, choose Free to crop freely, or choose 1:1, 4:3, 16:9, 3:2, or 2:1
- Under Rotate and flip, click Rotate 90°, Flip horizontally, or Flip vertically
How to Make a Circle or Rounded-Corner Image
- Select the Shape tool
- Under Mask, choose Circle or Rounded; for Rounded, set the Corner radius
- Optionally, add a Border and choose a Border color
- Under Outside the shape, choose Transparent, or choose Color to fill the corners with a color that matches your email background
Images with transparent corners save as PNG files, so the corners stay clear in your email.
How to Remove an Image Background
- Select the Background tool
- Under Subject, choose People for headshots, or Anything for products and other objects
- Under Replace with, choose None to leave the background clear, Color to fill it, or Blur to soften it
To undo the removal, click Restore original background.
Background removal happens in your browser, and your photo is not sent anywhere to remove the background. The first time you use the Background tool, it takes a little longer to load. After that, it's much faster.
How to Add Text to an Image
The Text tool adds text on top of an image or a collage.
- Select the Text tool and click Add text
- Type your text in the Text field
- Drag the text on the image to move it into place
- Choose a Font, then set the Size, text color, Bold, Italic, alignment, and Shadow
To add more text, click Add text again. To edit existing text, select it in the Layers list. To delete it, click Remove text.
If your organization has added custom fonts to ContactMonkey, they appear first in the Font list under Your fonts, followed by the Default fonts.
How to Build a Collage
- Under Make a collage, add between 2 and 9 images from your computer or the File Manager
- Select the Collage tool and choose a Layout, such as 2×2 grid or One large, two small
- Set the Shape, Gap, Cell corners, and Background
- Drag an image inside its cell to reposition it
To change one image, select its cell, then click Upload from computer or Choose from File Manager, or Remove image to empty the cell.
How to Save Your Image and Add It to an Email
- Set the Output width in pixels
- Click Save to My Files or Save to Team Files. To switch between them, or to download the image instead, click the arrow next to the save button
- Close the Image Editor
- Add an Image block to your email and select your saved image from the File Manager
Use Undo, Redo or Reset at the top of the Image Editor at any time.
How the New Image Editor Differs from the Original
The new Image Editor adds circle images, background removal, collages, custom fonts, and editing images straight from the File Manager. It doesn't include filters, drawing, stickers, or frames yet. For those, use the original editor during the beta.
Troubleshooting
Problem: The Background tool won't load.
Solution: Your company network may block the site the tool downloads from huggingface.co. Ask your IT team to allow it. All other Image Editor tools still work.
Problem: My organization's custom font isn't in the Font list.
Solution: The Image Editor shows the custom fonts installed for your organization. Check that the font has been added, as described in Adding Custom Fonts.
Problem: My edited image didn't change the image in my email.
Solution: The Image Editor saves a new image to the File Manager. Select the new image in your Image block to use it.
