This article explains how to upload contacts, format phone numbers correctly, and create lists for SMS campaigns directly in ContactMonkey.
Understanding the Shared Contact Directory
ContactMonkey uses a shared contact Directory across both Email and SMS. Any contacts you upload in one tool automatically appear in the other.
If you only use SMS: You can ignore the shared Directory concept and manage contacts normally within the SMS dashboard.
Phone Number Formatting Requirements
ContactMonkey only sends SMS messages to phone numbers in these countries. Use the exact format shown for your country:
United States
- Supported Types: 10DLC, Toll-free
- Required Format: 1

Canada
- Supported Types: Longcode, Toll-free
- Required Format: 1
- Example: 14161231234
United Kingdom
- Supported Types: Toll-free
- Required Format: 44 or 07
- Example: 447911123456 or 07911123456
Australia
- Supported Types: Toll-free
- Required Format: 61 or (0)
- Example: 61412345678 or (02)12345678
Switzerland
- Supported Types: Toll-free
- Required Format: 41 or 0

Dominican Republic
- Supported Types: Toll-free
- Required Format: 1
- Example: 14152222222
Note: ContactMonkey will automatically append the + symbol to phone numbers for contacts that are uploaded to the directory, or with CSV uploads. You will still be required to include the country calling code and area code to ensure SMS deliverability.
