ContactMonkey automatically collects analytics data when you send emails through our tool. This article explains the methods used to track opens, clicks, read time, and more. The level of detail you see depends on your selected tracking option.
How email opens are tracked
ContactMonkey tracks opens using an invisible 1x1 image pixel that is automatically inserted into every email you send. When a recipient opens the email and their email client loads images, the tracking pixel activates and records an open. Click here to learn more.
Note: Opens are only counted when recipients have images enabled in their email client.
How link clicks are tracked
All links in your emails are automatically tracked, including:
- Text hyperlinks
- Button links
- Social media icons
- Embedded attachments
ContactMonkey uses URL redirects to track clicks. When a recipient clicks any link, they are briefly routed through a ContactMonkey tracking domain before being redirected to the intended destination. Click here to learn how to set up a custom URL.
How device type is tracked
Device type is derived from the User-Agent that is collected when the tracking pixel loads for an open or when a tracked link is clicked. Click here to learn more.
How read time is measured
ContactMonkey measures how long recipients spend viewing your email by analyzing tracking pixel data. Read time is categorized into three ranges:
- 1-3 seconds (quick scan)
- 4-9 seconds (moderate engagement)
- 10+ seconds (detailed reading)

How location is determined
When recipients open your email or click a link, ContactMonkey captures their geographic location (city and country) based on their IP address at the time of interaction.
Note: Location data reflects where the email was opened, not necessarily where the recipient is based. VPNs can also affect results.
